5.0 out of 5 starsThis vacuum is unbelievable
Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2013
I was considering a Dyson and the Miele S5981 Capricorn. After reading online reviews and perusing video comparisons I went with the Miele. The vacuum is surprisingly quiet for the tremendous amount of suction generated. Having experience with my trusty but extraordinarily loud, Hoover Windtunnel, I didn't think the Miele was generating much suction since the noise level was abated to such a great degree. But it was obvious upon using the Miele that it picked up more particulate matter, more effectively and more quietly than any vacuum I have ever encountered.

The parquet twister attachment works great on hardwood floors. The brush is made from horse hair, so it will not scratch your floor. The parquet brush head design has gaps where the brush head contacts the floor, allowing for particulates to be captured by the brush head and not simply collect in the head of the brush. Some particulate matter still collects on the brush head (as I believe you would encounter with any vacuum) however, with the Miele that effect is greatly ameliorated.

The park capability is a great feature as well - allowing you to insert the accessory onto the canister while still attached to the vacuum. It automatically turns the vacuum off and then back on when removed. If you park the accessory on the side - you can carry the vacuum with one hand, great functionality for moving up and down stairs.

The agitating powerhead (SEB236) with light has 5 height settings and functions flawlessly. Almost no carpet residue is left behind on this attachment. My old Hoover would collect carpet remnants on the outside as it vacuumed - I have noticed very little of that effect with the Miele Capricorn. It also has a nifty parking attachement to allow the powerhead to hold the connected vacuum hose perfectly vertical when parked - and also shuts off the agitator when placed in the park position.

Both the parquet twister attachement and the powerhead offer an astonishing about of mobility. You can easily twist and turn both around and under obstacles far easier than with any prior attachments I've encountered.

The HEPA filter truly works, I never get the feeling that I'm creating ambient dust as I vacuum. No strange leftover smells either, my Hoover had both problems.

I would also recommending opting for one of the mini turbobrush attachments (STB 101 or STB 20) for your small carpets, stairs, vehicles and smaller less accessible, carpeted areas.

The vacuum is exceedingly expensive and I had a difficult time justifying the amount spent. But I now understand why these vacuums are so costly - and so well received by consumers. Buy one of these and you probably won't need another vacuum for 20+ years. It's the Mercedes-Benz of vacuums and an excellent choice.

2.0 out of 5 stars Miele Capricorn Canister Vacuum Cleaner w/SEB236
Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2011

I just recently purchased the Miele Capricorn and I am not as happy with it as I would like to be for the price. Right out of the box the SEB236 carpet cleaner attachment had a shrill squeal that is very annoying and I don't know if there is something wrong with it (it works)or if maybe they all sound that way. I contacted Amazon right away about it but they said I will have to return the entire vacuum, they don't take back parts for exchange and they will not send me a shipping label for the return. It doesn't seem right that I should have to pay the return shipping if there is something wrong with the part. The vacuum suction is very good but the controls on the handle are a poor design, I accidently hit them when I vacuum which causes a sudden shift in power (always downward in my case) or I hit the power button which turns the entire vacuum off or the power control for the carpet attachment which shuts that off...VERY annoying! Also, as wonderful as the swivelhead on the bare floor attachment sounds, sometimes it swivels when you don't want it to and it ends up on it's side. I would prefer a stationary attachment. This attachment also will not go under a lot of my furniture because of its high design so this makes cleaning under some low furniture (like sofas) difficult. The "air-tite" vacuum bag that is supposed to be so good for allergies is not so air-tite, I am having a lot of trouble with the dust not going through the hose and into the rubber seal around the mouth of the bag, instead the dust and lint are ending up in the white filter inside the vacuum chamber. The filter is only supposed to have to be changed with each box of vac bags you use, but mine needs changing and I have only used the vaccuum twice. It was dirty the first time I used the vacuum. The bag came in the machine so I didn't install it. I read the directions and checked to see if maybe it was not installed correctly but it appears to be fine. I don't understand why it is doing this. Again, I'm not sure if the vacuum has a problem. Also, the paint on the machine got scrathes in it the first time I used the machine and I was being very careful. It is a vacuum clearer, it is going to bump into things now and then, the paint should not do this. My previous vacuum cleaner, a red Electrolux, I have had for about 10 years and it still has no scratches in the paint. All in all, the only good thing I have to say about the vacuum is that it has very good suction and is relatively light weight. The bags and filters are very expensive to replace and the machine is not at all what I expected for the price. I thought I was buying a Rolls Royce and I seem to have gotten a Nissan.

It works ok on carpet, doesn't suck up the small crumbs on hard wood floors. After a few months it started shutting itself off every 5 or 10 minutes. Looked online and found others having the same problems. Something about a circuit board in the handle getting zapped. Contacted the Amazon supplier, they sent me to Miele. Miele sent me to a service center who told me they don't want to support people who buy online. Then he tried to sell me bags and hepa filter. Nice!

4.0 out of 5 stars So Quiet It's Almost Scary!

I didn't quite believe the vacuum would be as quiet as advertised in the product description. When using it for wood floors, it IS whisper quiet. on the lower settings, I can barely even hear the vacuum. When vacuuming carpets, the unit is audible but no where near any vacuum I've owned before. I even prefer it to the central vacuum system that runs in my house - low noise and no giant hose to lug around.

Also of note, this baby turns on a dime, so to speak. It is so easy to operate one-handed. While I'm not sure if $1000+ justifies this vacuum, it is certainly without a doubt the best vacuum I have ever owned and used.

When I first got the vacuum cleaner I tried all of the hardest jobs around the house to put it to the test. It was important to me to validate such an expenditure for a vacuum cleaner. Needless to say, it passed the test with flying colors. We have a mix of wood floors and various piles of carpeting in our house with the usual types of furniture that must be vacuumed around, under, and behind. The vacuum, as so many reviews that I read, is well worth the extra money. It is what another more known German brand, Electrolux, used to be. You are not just paying for the name. I was impressed not only with its power (deep clean various piles of carpet), but also its build quality, quietness, flexibility, ease of maneuverability, and not emitting any dust into the air (with which I have had a problem with every other vacuum cleaner I have used). It has an active HEPA filter. As well, unlike the bagless models, I don't get hit with a cloud of dust from having to empty the cannister into the garbage. In fact, Miele has a clever design for sealing the vacuum bag when it is removed so that nothing escapes.

As a caveat, I originally started to purchase another Miele model without the SEB236 Brush Head until I read some other reviews. I cannot say just how much of a difference in cleaning this head makes. However, I reasoned that if I was going to spend this kind of money on a vacuum cleaner, I wanted the best brush head that comes with it with the most flexibility for different piles of carpeting. I also like the fact that I can control virtually everything from the handle without having to stop and reach down to the cannister for a button.

The only accessory I bought with this vacuum cleaner was the Extended Flexible Crevice Tool which is very useful. The only other accessory I plan to purchase is the STB101 handheld Turbobrush for carpeted stairs and upholstery.

I should mention that I am the husband, not the wife, writing this review.

1.0 out of 5 stars Broke almost immediately, then broke again
Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2013
I don't typically write reviews, but wanted to warn consumers of this product. The quality is extremely low -- and it is a very expensive product. We splurged, hoping for a vacuum cleaner that would last a good 5-10 years. Well -- this lasted less than 1. Almost immediately, the hinge on the top broke, and I was unable to close the top lid of the canister. The pieces are all plastic, so there is no chance of fixing this on your own. Rather than waste time and money fixing, I just taped down the lid. I would have been okay with this had the vacuum itself worked. Within a year, the very expensive, very complicated power brush broke. It just won't spin. I went to take off the covering to see if maybe it was just a band out of place ... and you can't open it. The screw heads have a strange star pattern. So I will go to fix my $1,300 vacuum - and probably drop another $300 -- all in less than a year.

Before this MIele, I had another one, the Red Star (or something like that) which lasted about 7 years. But I think Miele (like most products) has gone down hill in terms of quality. I will never get another Miele vacuum cleaner.

2.0 out of 5 stars Miele S5981 Capricorn W 236 Delux Power Nozzle
Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2010
I bought the Miele Capricorn after reading all the great reviews on Amazon. My last vacuum was falling apart and had the terrible vacuum smell that comes from owning a dog. Most of the reviews for this vacuum are glowing. I don't usually write reviews, but because my experience with this vacuum is completely different, I decided some consumers might benefit from a different perspective.

The Pros: Very quiet. My 100 pound Labrador used to take off running (and look out!) when I took out my old vacuum. This one is super-quiet and the dog stays put. I love the HEPA filter system as there is no smell (and especially no doggy smell) when vacuuming. Automatic cord retractor is great. A light goes on when the bag is full and needs to be replaced; the controls on the handle. These are all great features. Like most German products, it's designed to last.

The Cons: I've always had upright vacuums before and I can't seem to get used to the canister - I don't find it as efficient, and I find the swiveling handle annoying - it always seems to be in the way. Because I have a dog who sheds non-stop, I use the hose attachment a lot, to get all the dog hair from around the baseboards and under the cupboard edges. For the cost, I feel the Capricorn attachments are poorly designed. They are small, and the round brush attachment is awkward to use. I have all hardwood floors and the large hardwood floor attachment ends up just pushing around the dog hair, without really picking it up, so I have to use the power head without the brush running.
With my old vacuum, I would just pull out the hose and vacuum around the edges of the house, without using any attachments. You can't do that with the Capricorn because the edges of the metal wand (not sure what to call it) are very sharp and can scratch the floor. I actually put a nick in the electric cord when I accidentally knocked it with the wand. Because the wand is metal, it is very heavy and I end up with a backache after using it (during dog shedding season, I vacuum my house twice a day using the wand).

I paid extra for the bigger power head. It has a very bright light on it when you are using the carpet-brush feature. If you are using just the power head without the brush (suction only), the light doesn't go on - not sure why that it. However, the light must be an LED light - it is very bright, with a blue tinge. If your house is dark, it's a great feature when you're vacuuming, but if you are using it during the day, it makes it very difficult to see.
Back to the dog again - I was able to use my old upright to vacuum the dog bed. I would stand with a foot on each side to hold it down, and vacuum up all the hair. The Capricorn power brush is so sensitive it immediately shuts down if it catches even the tiniest wrinkle in the dog-bed. I have a few area rugs and if I get the power head near the edge of the rugs, it always catches and shuts down.
This was a very expensive vacuum. For the most part, it's well-built (I would not say it is particularly well-designed), but it just doesn't work for me, which is why I am only giving it two stars.

I do all the vacuuming in the house, so I wanted a quality vacuum that would make vacuuming as fun and as little work as possible.

This vacuum is worth every penny. It is extremely powerful and quiet. We have two big dogs and this picks up the hair no problem. Our red carpet looks like new each time we vacuum. There is no "vacuum" dust smell that I have hated about other vacuums. Best of all, this has to be one of the quietest vacuums on the market. You can talk on the phone or whatever while vacuuming it is so quiet. Also, this vacuum is small and lightweight, which makes vacuuming easy and makes it easy to get under things and into tight spaces. The controls are easy to use, it has about 7 power settings, and the height is easily adjustable. The power brush has an automatic jam shut off that protects the belt if something gets jammed in it. It has not clogged once by the way... Changing the bags is super quick and easy and not messy in the least bit. The small attachments store conveniently in the top of the canister and are very practical to use. I love the retractable cord which is super long and retracts perfectly every time. It has many other practical, thoughtful features that you will appreciate each time you vacuum. Those Germans thought of everything with this vacuum! Plus, if you have allergies, this vacuum is one of the best for that with its excellent air filtration abilities.

When you use this product, you will see that this is one of the finest vacuums available today. I'm so thankful I chose this vacuum over all the others I considered.

I have 3 dogs and one cat and was without a vacuum for seven weeks until this arrived at my door. No problems sucking up all that hair and dirt - all gone. What power!! Yes, a couple of small complaints, but it wouldn't change my star rating or my love for the machine. Yes, the power cord is short and you have to constantly change it, but I'll get used to that. The powerbrush head is a little big and doesn't go everywhere my old Royal head went, but it does swivel to my heart's content and that makes up for it. It is pricey, but worth it as it has such wonderful POWER. Oh, one more thing for me to get used to is the hose is rather short and the canister is right behind me, but that is a good thing. My old Royal had a long hose and it was so far behind that it constantly banged into the wall and made marks, this way I have total control over the canister and it won't be going anywhere I don't want it to go. Also easy to store, fits in the closet like a dream. And, I can hear the phone ring while I am vacuuming - a first. Bottom line - Buy it - you'll be happy with this little, quiet, but POWERFUL machine. I know I am.
